A minimum of 64 Killed in Rio's Biggest Police Raid on Criminal Groups
At least 64 individuals lost their lives in a law enforcement action targeting the Red Command gang in the Brazilian city's north zone - the most extensive and fatal action in the region's past.
Four police officers were included in the fatalities during the security mission in the communities of Alemão and Penha, government representatives said. In excess of 80 suspects were taken into custody.
Intense confrontations commenced when about 2,500 law enforcement officers initiated the operation on Tuesday morning. The criminal organization countered with shooting, setting fire to barriers and dropping bombs from drones, police representatives said.
The United Nations human rights body stated it felt "horrified" by the police operation, urging "immediate and thorough inquiries".
Mission Consequences
The informal settlements near the aerial transportation hub is considered to be the headquarters of one of Brazil's most powerful organised crime groups.
Government representatives stated no less than 50 of those killed were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".
Many residents were injured, including civilians caught in the crossfire.

Residents have likened the mountainous region - housing around 300,000 residents - to a "battlefield" since the mission commenced.

Organized Crime Spread
The Red Command group have been expanding their control throughout the region, growing illegal substance trade paths and control of the hillside favelas.
Local law enforcement stated over 200kg (441lb) of drugs were captured in the raid, along with dozens of firearms.

Many of the individuals are thought to be affiliates of a group from the northern region who are at the moment taking refuge in Rio de Janeiro.
