Users Coming Off Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who come off new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a major health publication shows that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing these drugs should be cognizant of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The study, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with other pills.

Researchers note that people who lose weight through dieting typically have a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the injections accounts for the heightened rebound.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this medication results in appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Issue?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

Users who have stopped the medication explain a intense resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if something flipping and you become extremely hungry," said one woman.

The struggle is compounded if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Figures show that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts caution that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing behavioural support.
